Manchester was trending worldwide on Twitter this afternoon – with thousands of people telling their followers why the city is so great. Scores of Twitter users posted messages on the microblogging site for the first Manchester Hour – with the aim of making it one of the most talked about subjects in the globe.

They used the hashtag #ManchesterHour – and wrote about their favourite things in the city between 4pm and 5pm, from its music to architecture. Celebrities also got involved including Coronation Street’s Catherine Tyldesley who posted to her 95,000 followers:

“I love this city because its ever changing. More vibrant with each year! And the people make it what it is! #ManchesterHour.”

Rochdale’s TV chef Andrew Nutter added:

“Show your love for the worlds greatest city #MANCHESTERHOUR between 4-5pm. The world will be watching.”

And Granada Reports’ presenter Lucy Meacock wrote:

“Good to see #ManchesterHour trending. If you love the city tell the rest of the world why it means so much to you.”
